Understanding the CNA Exam

Most states use Pearson VUE or Prometric to administer the exam. Understanding the format and preparing strategically makes the difference between passing and retaking.

The Written Exam

  • Psychosocial Care (10-15%) β€” Communication, mental health, end-of-life
  • Role of the Nurse Aide (10-15%) β€” Scope, documentation, legal/ethical
  • Safety and Infection Control (10-15%) β€” Standard precautions, falls, fire safety
  • Patient Rights (10-15%) β€” Privacy, dignity, abuse prevention

Study Strategies

  1. Create a study schedule β€” Consistency beats marathon sessions
  2. Use multiple resources β€” Textbook, online tests, apps, study groups
  3. Understand, don't memorize β€” The exam tests application of knowledge
  4. Watch for key words β€” "First," "Most important," "Best," "Immediately"
  5. Remember ABCs β€” Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Safety always comes first

The Skills Exam

Format

  • 3-5 randomly selected skills
  • 25-35 minutes total
  • Must pass ALL selected skills

Commonly Tested Skills

Hand washing, blood pressure, pulse/respiration, weight measurement, bed bath, oral care, dressing, positioning, bed making, transfers, feeding, range of motion, perineal care, intake/output.

Critical Steps for EVERY Skill

Before: Wash hands, identify patient, introduce yourself, explain procedure, provide privacy, check safety.

During: Wear gloves when appropriate, maintain dignity, communicate, follow infection control.

After: Ensure comfort and safety, place call light within reach, bed in lowest position, remove gloves, wash hands, document.

  • Practice each skill until automatic
  • Use your state's skills checklist
  • Talk through every step
  • Don't rush β€” accuracy over speed
  • If you make a mistake, ask to restart

Exam Day Tips

Night Before

  • Full night's sleep, lay out everything needed, light review only

Day Of

  • Arrive 30 minutes early with required ID
  • Wear comfortable, professional attire
  • Eat a balanced breakfast, stay calm and confident

During the Exam

  • Read each question carefully, manage your time
  • Don't change answers unless certain
